At Camp Fire, our leadership believes in strong mentorship and modeling behavior that leads to success. Our Board of Directors come from a varied background of education, technology, youth development, financial services, media, and nonprofit organizations. Board Members are elected to serve a term of three years, and Officers are elected to serve a term of two years. Members and Officers may serve up to two consecutive terms. The Board of Directors meets monthly.
We also have a number of standing committees on which individuals may serve. You do not have to be a member of the board to serve on a committee! The current committees are: Finance, Fundraising, Strategic Facilities, and Board Development.

2016-2017 Board of Directors
Sharon Hayward, President
Sharon Hayward has served on the Board of Directors for Camp Fire River Bend since 2014, and was the Secretary from 2014-2016. Sharon was a Camp Fire member and attended Camp Tannadoonah as a youth. She works as an information technology project manager at the University of Notre Dame, and teaches classes in the Mendoza College of Business at Notre Dame. Sharon holds a bachelor’s degree in Education, a master’s degree in Management, and a Project Management Professional certification. Sharon and her husband, Rob, live in Elkhart, and have four children and one grandchild.
Cindy Krupp, Vice President
Cindy Krupp has served on the Board of Directors for Camp Fire River Bend since 2013, and was the President of the board from 2014-2016. Prior to joining the board, Cindy was a nurse at Camp Tannadoonah since 2007. Cindy’s first experience in Camp Fire was as a Bluebird growing up in Minnesota. Cindy also serves on the Parents’ Board for Culver Academy, and has chaired their annual fundraiser auction. Cindy and her husband, Rich, live in Mishawaka, and their three children have all attended and worked at Camp Tannadoonah.
John Engel, Treasurer
John Engel has served on the Board of Directors for Camp Fire River Bend since 2014, and also previously served on the board as Treasurer from 2008-2011. As treasurer, he is the Chair of the Finance Committee. John holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting, and a master’s degree in Not-for-Profit Administration. John works as a Senior Accountant for Research and Sponsored Programs at the University of Notre Dame. He and his wife, Brenda, live in Niles.
Andrew Roche, Secretary
Andrew Roche has served on the Board of Directors for Camp Fire River Bend since 2014, and is the Chair of the Strategic Facilities Committee. Andrew holds bachelor’s degrees in Architecture and Environmental Design. He is a partner at Creative Design Solutions, Inc. in South Bend, where he works as an architect and project manager. Andrew, his wife Yolanda (a former Tannadoonah camper and staff member), and their future camper Corinne, live in South Bend.
Members at Large
Shelley Chakan was elected to the Board of Directors for Camp Fire River Bend in June 2016. She is the chair of the Marketing and Fundraising Committee. Shelley also serves as the chair of the Ways and Means Committee at St. Thomas school in Elkhart. Shelley holds a bachelor’s degree in Communications and Journalism, and a master’s degree in Education. She has worked in media, public relations, and advertising, and is currently employed by the South Bend Tribune as the Vice President of Advertising. Shelley and her husband, Scott, live in Elkhart, and their son Scott attended Camp Tannadoonah for the first time in 2016.
Phil Iapalucci has served on the Board of Directors since 2014, is the chair of the Board Development Committee, and is a member of the Finance Committee. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting, a master’s of business administration, and is a certified public accountant (CPA). Phil is currently working for Indiana University South Bend as the Vice Chancellor of Administration and Finance. He has over 25 years of professional experience in business and finance, including financial positions with Deloitte, Eastman Kodak, the University of Notre Dame, Southwestern Michigan College, and the University of South Carolina System. Phil, his wife Carol, and their three children live in Granger, and their youngest daughter attended Camp Tannadoonah for several years.
Cory Marlow has served on the Board of Directors since 2014, and is a member of the finance committee. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration. Cory is the Executive Vice President of Financial Partners, Inc. in Elkhart, a partner in the Bacon Hill Kitchen and Pub, and was recently elected Porter Township (MI) Supervisor. He has served for six years as a board member for the United Cancer Services Cockopalooza Event, is a member of the Pillars of Elkhart, and is also on the board for the Junior Achievement and Lemonade Day serving Elkhart County. In 2016 Cory was named one of Michiana’s Forty Under 40, an honor which recognizes regional business and professional leaders who have achieved success before the age of 40. Cory and his wife, Brittany (a former Tannadoonah camper), and their future camper, Foster, live on Shavehead Lake, in Vandalia, MI.
Bob Pence was elected to the Board of Directors for Camp Fire River Bend in September 2016. Bob is a retired attorney and former corporate vice president for The Mosaic Company. He holds a bachelor’s degree in finance and Juris Doctor (J.D) from the University of Illinois. Bob’s business experience includes extensive involvement in the governance of boards of directors for public companies, as well as a broad range of business, financial, and legal matters. Bob served on the Board of Education for the Western Springs IL District 101 for four years, during which time he chaired the building committee, and was a member of the finance committee. He was a member of the Western Springs District 101 School Board Caucus for nine years, and served in the roles of Secretary and President. Bob is recently retired, and he and his wife, Barb, live at Birch Lake spend their winters near their daughter and granddaughter in Marshall, MI. Their two daughters attended Camp Tannadoonah, and their new granddaughter looks forward to attending Camp T in the future.
Patrick Welch was elected to the Board of Directors for Camp Fire River Bend in March 2017 and is a member of the Marketing and Fundraising Committee. Currently, he is the President of AlphaGraphics, a print and marketing company located in Elkhart and South Bend, IN. Patrick is also a board member of WNIT, past president of Elcona Country Club, past president of Montessori School of Elkhart, Rotary Club of South Bend and United Way of Elkhart County and is a graduate of Indiana University. Both of his daughters were campers at Camp Tannadoonah. He and his wife Jeannie reside at Birch Lake in the spring and summer and winter in Naples, Fl.
